Re: White backgrounds Actually it makes no difference if its white or black, the screen is still being lit from behind anyway. If you look at a black area and then the same one when it's turned off it is noticeably darker.

it's a great thing but you save more energy if you just turn your computer off over night or when you leave

Anonymous
so why have all google-sites white backgrounds instead of a black for saving energy?

Marasinhe
great effort... must be promote every pc user...

Good so far. Im guessing that the kWh means Kilowatts per hour. I haven't gotten anything so far because I just got it. We will just have to wait and see.

JTDT
It has stayed at 3 kWhs for a week. Does it count up? How do u get more kwhs?

Love it, especially seeing over time how much energy I'm saving

nice, but it would be great to choise a different sleep time if needed.

Sindre
Nice. Would be even nicer if it could also show how many hours a day your computer is turned on, and how that compares to the average/norm. Would also be cool if it could include a power saving-tip-of-the-week (or day).

I must have been an evil person, if everyone says their savings have been small... i saved 2kwhs since i have it, and it hasn't been long... anyway, every little helps! i like it :)

I guess we can't just sit here and watch the Energy Saver and expect any savings to rack up... we have to let it shut down or stand by or hibernate in order to have savings. :-)

Although the units are too big, I think that this is a great idea and can save a lot of energy. Everyone should have this gadget.

Arno
It is a nice idea, but this gadget has some bugs. If you double-click the Energy Saver does not minimize. My computer does not go in stand-by mode, although it is supposed to. And if the gadget has been collapsed and I select "Pause" on the side instead of in expanded mode, well, then nothing happens. You have to pause in expanded mode in order for it to work. And also, I paused for 90 minutes before I went to bed and on the next morning I still had 81 minutes left...

I feel good about saving a little bit each day, but make the units of measure smaller!!

Qubits
Idiots!!! How about going down to smaller units for a single user? May be watt-hours or milliwatt-hours instead of kilowatt-hours. I feel useless looking at the same number for days.

I think it is very good but if i change the power properties does it still give me correct info?

Anonymous
Probably not the right place to post this....but I'm assuming this gadget works similar to that of the "localcooling" project? Which simply sets your power mgmt settings...? What advantage does this have over the localcooling project? :)

I can't seem to make this work. It configured my power options OK but the machine only goes into standby if I quit Google desktop (is this because of search indexing?), so I don't get any feedback on my power saving.

Hi Flame1, I did met the same issue (Using FireFox 3.0) I had installed Google Desktop 5.1.070.2322-en-pb (English) on my XP SP3 (UK version). I did reinstalled Google Desktop and have now version 5.7.0806.1024-fr-pb (French), it was still not directly working and the FireFox extension did not seem to install. But after a reboot (and letting Windows Defender, accept the modifications of Google Desktop in the registry) it works fine. So it seems even to work with a non US version of Google Desktop.
