Search Results: Secure webpages and password-protected files

Secure webpages

You can set Google Desktop to not search information shown on secure sites. Here's how:

  1. Click the Desktop system tray icon system tray icon.
  2. Select Options.
  3. In the 'Search Types' section, deselect the 'Secure pages (HTTPS) in web history' checkbox.
  4. Click Save Preferences.

This won't prevent Desktop from storing information from non-secure sites. With or without Desktop, you should always think carefully before you send private information, such as credit card numbers, to a non-secure site.

Password-protected files

By default, Desktop doesn't index password-protected files. If you'd like to search the text within these files, you'll need to adjust your Desktop preferences. Here's how:

  1. Click the Desktop system tray icon system tray icon.
  2. Select Options.
  3. In the 'Search Types' section, select the 'Password-protected Office documents' checkbox.
  4. Click Save Preferences.

Password-protected files will now be included in your search results. When you find one of these files, you can either enter your password again to view the current version of the file or click the cached link to see how the file looked the last time you opened or saved it.
