How do I uninstall Google Desktop for Mac?

Find instructions for uninstalling Google Desktop by selecting your version:

To see your version number, go to the Google Desktop application and choose Google Desktop > About Google Desktop. Or, in your browser, go to the Google Desktop search page and click About.

Latest version

  1. In the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
  2. Select Google Desktop.
  3. Click the Feedback tab.
  4. Click Uninstall Google Desktop.
  5. If you'd like to save your current index, be sure to select the box next to 'Save data from Google Desktop for later.' To delete your index, keep the box deselected. Saving the current index will allow Google Desktop to rebuild its index faster if you plan to reinstall Google Desktop in the future.
  6. Click Uninstall.
  7. Restart your computer.
On a FileVault volume? Uninstalling won't remove your Google Desktop index if your home directory is on a FileVault volume. You can manually remove it with the following command:

Please type this command carefully. The SUDO command enables powerful modifications to your Mac. If you're not comfortable doing this, consult your local Mac guru.

sudo rm -rf ~/.GoogleDesktop.trindex

Version 1.5 and earlier

To uninstall Google Desktop, please follow the instructions below:

  1. In Finder, select Go.
  2. Select Applications.
  3. Open 'Google Updater' in this folder.
  4. Select Google Desktop in the Product list. If you don't see your list of installed Google software, click My Software List.
  5. Click Uninstall.
  6. If you'd like to save your current index, be sure to select the box next to 'Save data from Google Desktop for later.' To delete your index, keep the box deselected. Saving the current index will allow Google Desktop to rebuild its index faster if you plan to reinstall Google Desktop at a later time.
  7. Restart your computer.

Alternatively, you can uninstall from the System Preferences window.

  1. In the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
  2. Select Google Desktop.
  3. Click the the Feedback tab.
  4. Click Open Google Updater.
  5. Select Google Desktop in the Product list. If you don't see your list of installed Google software, click My Software List.
  6. Click Uninstall.
  7. You'll be asked if you want to delete your existing index. To remove all traces of Google Desktop, click Yes. (If you reinstall later, the index will be recreated.)
  8. Restart your computer.
On a FileVault volume? Uninstalling won't remove your Google Desktop index if your home directory is on a FileVault volume. You can manually remove it with the following command:
